Masters Rowing

Rowing is an great way to stay fit, make friends, and participate in a competitive sport at any age.   Rowing is unique because it allows intense physical training with little to no damage to knees and joints allowing sportsmen to continue well into older ages.   For those that are competitive, Masters rowing regattas use handicaps based on age and allow crews of any age to compete in a way that is spirited and highly challenging.     Even better if your into fitness/health or competition rowing is a wonderful way to enjoy the water and witness beautiful scenes connected with tranquil waters.
Catawba's Masters Rowing program is suitable for individuals looking for stiff competition as well as those looking only to improve fitness and enjoy the company of friends.    If you're new to rowing CYC (Catawba yacht club) offers Learn to Row programs, we also welcome experienced yet rusty rowers, and are happy to help get you started with our club and even introduce you to the broader Catawba Yacht Club which includes Sailing as well as Rowing teams.

Racing and Fitness


The CYC Rowing team has a long history of competing in regattas on a national and even International level.  The team members come from various backgrounds including folks that rowed at a collegiate or Olympic level and many that picked up rowing for the first time in their 30's or 40's.    Rowing is a great way to stay connected to competition at any age.

For Fitness

Rowing is a great total body workout. It uses all of the body’s major muscle groups:
Roughly 60% of your power should come from pushing with the legs, 20% from bracing the core and 20% from arms
..says the Daily Burn   High intensity rowing burns over 800 calories per hour and is significantly more enjoyable than sitting in a gym or fitness class.   Although strenuous, it is low impact, improves flexibility, strengthens the back and core, and can also help prevent and manage osteoporosis.    CYC Rowers are competitive in racing, and use the sport for fitness.      Read More here...
