First Independence Day Singles Regatta
Things are different in 2020, year of the COVID 19 pandemic. CYC has cancelled organized rowing. Summer regional and national regattas have been cancelled as well, and the fate of the fall rowing regattas is still uncertain. But that hasn’t stopped CYC! Each morning sees groups of singles rowers (and the occasional family double or quad) putting in meters for fun and to train in the hope that the fall regattas will happen. The general consensus is that time in a single only improves a rower’s technique and fitness! To keep things lively, Tom Phillips had the idea of a singles sprint race. Lisa Phillips took on the challenge of organizing the race with the help of Tom and a number of other rowers and the result was the first (not the last, we hope!!!) first annual Independence Day singles regatta which took place on July 4 starting at 6:30 a.m. It turned out to be a beautiful morning, with perfect water. Five women and eight men raced one thousand meters, the distance of a masters’ sprint race. This was a chase race, meaning that rowers were handicapped by age and starts were staggered to reflect the rowers’ handicaps. The winner of the women’s race was Melissa McGuire, with Jocelyn Piccone and Kathy Crenshaw coming in second and third. In the men’s race, Tom Phillips took the gold, followed closely by Paul Jeffrey and Henri Durand. Tom also won the rum cake baked by Nancy Smith for being the Regatta grand champion. The race was a lot of fun and a great opportunity for CYC rowers to race a sprint. Several of the participants had never before raced a single, and some rowers were in boats they had never rowed. Kudos to these game rowers. And kudos also to everyone who helped make the race a big success. We hope that this will only be the first in a series of fun summer rowing challenges! It was a great way for our rowers to have a responsible and safe celebration of Independence Day.
